When can I Apply to Medicare online?
The very first time you can apply to Medicare is called your Initial Enrollment Period. This is a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period that typically:
- Begins 3 months before the month you turn 65
- Includes the month you turn 65
- Ends 3 months after the month you turn 65
However, if you sign up and then decide you want to change plans, you can do so. Though, choose wisely, because you can only change your plan once a year during the Annual Enrollment Period which runs from October 15th through December 7th. During this time, you can compare plans, shop around for the best deals, and enroll in the plan of your choice for the upcoming year.
What happens after I apply?
In most cases, once your application is submitted electronically, you’re done. Social Security will process your application and contact you by telephone or by mail if any further information is needed.
Many people opt to apply online as it is the quickest and easiest.
