When you are automatically enrolled into Original Medicare, Parts A and B, transportation to and from doctor appointments is not generally covered.
Emergency transportation is covered (think: ambulance) but must meet the following criteria:
- You need medically necessary emergency services.
- You need to go to the nearest appropriate medical facility
- Transport in another vehicle could put your health at an increased risk.
Keep in mind, you will still pay 20% of the cost after you’ve met your Part B deductible.
However, can you imagine how convenient it would be if it was covered? Some Medicare Advantage plans may cover transportation to doctor appointments!
When it comes to nonemergency transportation, as in the examples listed above, these services are not generally covered. However, you do have options. Medicare Advantage plans may cover nonemergency transportation to a doctor’s office or clinic. However, it is important to note that this service may be covered only if it’s to a location approved by your plan. Additionally, rules and requirements can vary, so it’s important to check your specific plan to see what’s included.
